EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy that incorporates elements from different therapeutic approaches into a set of protocols. EMDR has been extensively researched and is highly effective in working through psychological stress and trauma. It uses dual attention stimulation (DAS) to engage bilateral brain movement, which is said to be similar to Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. REM sleep is believed to be the time when the body processes a day’s events. There is an eight-phase process that examines negative belief systems and introduces alternative positive cognitions while helping one to process information. There is minimal discussion of the event(s), and you remain present, in control, and supported at all times. This therapy modality is said to help resolve trauma more rapidly than traditional talk therapy. Please see the Resources page for a link to the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) website for additional information.
Neurofeedback (LENS)
Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, brain-based approach that supports optimal central nervous system
functioning. Low Energy Neurofeedback (LENS) is a passive, non-talk modality that provides brief feedback signals to help the brain shift away from rigid or maladaptive patterns and toward greater flexibility and regulation. Neurofeedback has been used to address concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma exposure, PTSD, addictions, traumatic brain injury (TBI), fatigue, and performance optimization. It may be offered as a standalone service or integrated with psychotherapy and other clinical modalities. This approach supports nervous system stability, cognitive clarity, and long-term resilience.
Reiki Energy Work
Reiki is a gentle, complementary energy-based practice that supports relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being. Originating in Japan, Reiki is based on the understanding that subtle energy flows throughout the body and may influence physical and emotional balance. During a Reiki session, light touch or hands positioned just above the body are used to promote deep relaxation and nervous system settling. Many individuals report a sense of calm, clarity, emotional release, or improved internal balance following sessions. Reiki may enhance therapeutic work when used in conjunction with other treatment modalities by supporting regulation, increasing body awareness, and facilitating a greater sense of safety within the nervous system. It can also be offered as a standalone wellness service for individuals seeking stress reduction and restorative balance. Reiki is not a replacement for psychotherapy or medical treatment; rather, it is a supportive approach that may complement evidence-based care and integrative wellness practices.
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)- RETIRED
Animals offer a unique addition to a therapy session. Our furry little friends have been shown to reduce stress, help with emotion regulation, frustration tolerance, boundary setting, forgiveness, improve attention, communication skills, team building, and develop empathy. Additionally, animals assist with improving relaxation in people, and having an animal in therapy has been shown to increase motivation and therapy engagement. In AAT, parallels are typically drawn between animal behaviors and human behaviors or situations. Specific treatment objectives will be matched with treatment goals to see if AAT is the best fit for your situation. At Vista Counseling, we have a therapy dog – Bella, who helps co-facilitate sessions. Bella is always in the present moment, loves working with others, and looks forward to meeting you.
BioMat
This is a 1-inch thick, 17-layered BioMat that delivers the synergistic benefits of Infrared Light, Amethyst Crystals, and Negative Ions. This crystal infrared heating pad assists your body in achieving overall Well-Being. Pierce J Howard, PhD, states that negative ions “increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy.” The Journal of Alternative and Comparative Medicine (Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, 1995) states that negative ions increase brain levels of serotonin. Research at the Niwa Institute for Immunology in Japan found that “Infrared Rays become 200x more bio-compatible when conducted through amethyst.” This mat can be used collaboratively with most other treatment modalities.
Auricular acupuncture is a complementary non-verbal modality that utilizes a standardized five-point ear protocol commonly referred to as the AAT or ADS. Recognized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), this approach has been incorporated in behavioral health and substance use settings as a supportive adjunct treatment. This protocol is often used to support stress reduction, emotional regulation, sleep improvement, and craving management. Within traditional Chinese medicine, treatment is understood to promote balance in the body’s energy system (Qi), contributing to overall regulation and internal stability. Auricular acupuncture may be offered as a standalone wellness service or integrated alongside psychotherapy and other nervous system–focused approaches.
Mindfulness, Visualization, and Breath Work
Mindfulness, visualization, and breath work are typically incorporated into all sessions and treatment modalities. Psycho-education around how breath impacts the brain is vital to understanding why this is so important to self-regulation. Given the current state of our society, we are frequently on the go and rarely stop or slow down. This creates anxiety, stress, feelings of being overwhelmed, ruminating thoughts, depression, and many other mental health concerns. By slowing down and exploring breath work, we can bring ourselves into the present moment and begin to acknowledge what our bodies need and ourselves. Stop reaching for a pill to help you get in control. Harness the power of your mind and body. Being aware and present of one’s feelings, emotions, and bodily sensations is at the root of positive change.
